Sefer Bereishit contains truths about the human condition that remain as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. With an eye towards the ancient world, its culture, and belief systems, this course will take a close look at assumptions the Tanakh subverts, and revolutionary concepts it introduces. Join us as we study the texts that have transformed humanity’s understanding of the world and its place within it. The seminar will utilize classic commentators alongside new philosophical interpretations, including Prof. Leon Kass’ The Beginning of Wisdom.

Prior to making Aliyah, Yael taught Tanakh at the Upper School of Ramaz, and then went on to join the Judaic Studies faculty at Yeshiva University’s Stern College for Women. Yael Leibowitz has her Master’s degree in Judaic Studies from Columbia University. She has taught Continuing Education courses at Drisha Institute for Jewish Education and served as Resident Scholar at the Jewish Center of Manhattan. She is currently teaching at Matan Women’s Institute for Torah Learning and is a frequent lecturer in North America and the United Kingdom.
