Image for Jews and Presidents: Five Great Moments in American History

In this course, we will study the role of Jews in American society through close readings of the letters, presidential orders, statements, and speeches of some of our most famous presidents. By examining primary source documents, we will explore how Jews have been impacted by the actions of American leaders. How have our presidents encouraged Jews to practice their religion freely in the United States? Have American leaders treated Jews fairly? Have our presidents changed their views on the treatment of the Jews? And what about the U.S.’s support for Israel—both during its creation as a state and throughout conflicts with its neighbors in the region? Students will focus on five key primary sources and use discussion, debate, and historical context to begin to answer these important and fascinating questions.

This course is supported by Judy Fleischer, as part of the Fleischer Forum initiative on American civilization.
