Image for Pope Francis Goes to Washington: On Freedom, Love, and Justice

What are the fundamental principles on which the United States is founded, and how do these comport with religious faith?  This seminar will address this crucial question through careful study of one of the most important public recent reflections on this topic: Pope Francis’ 2015 speech to the Joint Session of the United States Congress.  In so doing we will particularly examine how the Pope understands the role that America plays in advancing concepts of freedom and justice and love of neighbor.  We will also particularly examine the Pope’s choice of four exemplary Americans – Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton – as specifically representative of our nation’s promise.
