Yiddish is a Jewish language that has existed for nearly 1,000 years in Europe and is still spoken on almost every continent today. Some renowned Yiddish authors wrote literature for children, imbuing fairytales and fables with distinctly Jewish perspectives on the importance of faith, family, tradition, and education. In this course, we will read a sampling of Yiddish children’s literature (translated into English) from the anthology Honey on the Page and examine what wisdom it has to offer, and what relevance that wisdom has for young people in the 21st century. Through reading and discussing these stories, we will participate in the venerable Jewish task of transmitting our heritage through the exchange of ideas, harnessing children’s literature to empower the guardians of our Jewish future.
