Beyond the Headlines: The Major Disputes in Israeli Politics

Many outsiders still believe that the Oslo Accords and Israeli-Palestinian negotiations are the major divides in Israeli politics. Yet with negotiations stalled for many years, other issues have played an arguably larger role in Israeli public policy debates. In this seminar, we’ll go beyond the headlines to explore topics that are truly dividing the Knesset. Topics covered include:

1) the role of the Supreme Court and the division of powers between different branches of government

2) the integration of Haredim into broader Israeli society

3) Israel-Diaspora relations;

4) conservative vs. progressive economic policies.

Talia Dekel-Fleissig

Talia Dekel-Fleissig is Vice President of Content at the Jerusalem Press Club, in charge of leading strategy for the Club's activities vis-à-vis the foreign press covering Israel and its other audiences. Previously, she was head of International Press and a Senior Fellow at The Israel Project. She has worked for several NGOs and nonprofits, including the Tikvah Fund and the Institute for Zionist Strategies. Talia also worked as an editor for the Jerusalem Post and was an officer in the IDF’s Liaison & Foreign Relations Division. She holds an MA in Conflict Resolution from Tel Aviv University and a BA in Political Science and Islamic & Middle Eastern Studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She made aliyah from New Zealand in 2003.
