Image for Jews and the Supreme Court: Key Recent Cases

American Jews have long been active advocates in the courts, pressing arguments that speak to questions of Jewish communal identity, values, and interests. In this class, we will explore legal cases of unique Jewish interest and what Jewish advocacy in those cases tells us about who we are as American Jews and how we fit into the American project. Our exploration will focus on seminal, and often dueling, briefs filed by Jewish institutions in some of the most important cases before the Supreme Court. Mining these documents will reveal how ongoing debates within Jewish legal advocacy draw from different visions of the past, present, and future of American Jewry.
