The Hebrew Bible is full of powerful reflections about the enduring human dilemmas of war and peace, justice and injustice, the holy and the profane, but no book takes on these philosophical questions more directly than Ecclesiastes.

The answers that the book offers to those questions were not always seen as very pious. Rabbinic commentators have even argued over whether Ecclesiastes should have properly been included in the canon at all.
